Are you a die-hard coffee enthusiast looking to explore new options?

Whatever your reason, you’ve come to the right place.

In this blog post, I’m going to explore the topic of matcha vs coffee: from taste and energy levels to health benefits and preparation methods, you’ll get it all.

So, sit back, grab your favorite mug, and let’s explore the matcha vs coffee debate. But before we both start enjoying matcha vs coffee, I have to mention that Nioteas made a video on this topic. I think you should check it out:

1. What is matcha tea?

Let’s first understand what matcha is.

Matcha is a finely ground powder made from specially grown and processed green tea leaves. The tea plants used for matcha are shade-grown for about 20 days before harvesting, which boosts the content of chlorophyll and amino acids.

After harvesting, the leaves are carefully steamed, dried, and ground into a fine powder using stone mills.

Unlike regular green tea, where the leaves are steeped in water and then discarded, matcha preparation involves consuming the entire leaf. This means you’re getting a concentrated dose of all the nutrients and antioxidants found in green tea.

In fact, one cup of matcha is equivalent to about 10 cups of regularly brewed green tea in terms of nutritional value!

2. Matcha vs coffee: do both contain caffeine?

One of the main reasons people reach for coffee is the energy boost it provides.

But how does matcha compare in terms of caffeine content and energy levels?

Let’s take a closer look.

Caffeine content of coffee or matcha

Coffee: A typical 8-ounce cup of coffee contains around 95mg of caffeine, although this can be different depending on the type of coffee and brewing method.

Matcha: A serving of matcha (about 1 teaspoon!) contains around 70mg of caffeine, which is slightly lower than coffee.

3. Energy levels: Is matcha better than coffee?

While both matcha and coffee contain caffeine, the effects on energy levels are quite different.

Coffee can give you a quick jolt of energy, but it often comes with a crash later on. This is because coffee’s caffeine is released into your bloodstream quickly, providing a rapid spike in energy followed by a sudden drop.

Comparison of duration effect between matcha vs coffee

Matcha provides a more sustained energy release due to the presence of L-theanine, an amino acid that promotes relaxation without drowsiness. L-theanine works synergistically with caffeine to provide a calm, focused energy that lasts for several hours.

This is why many people report feeling more alert and productive after drinking matcha, without the jitters or crash associated with coffee.

4. The taste test: where coffee beats matcha

When it comes to taste, matcha and coffee are worlds apart.

Coffee has a bold, roasted flavor that many people love, with notes of bitterness and acidity. The taste of coffee can be different depending on the type of beans, roasting method, and preparation style – you know it all. Some people enjoy adding milk, sugar, or other flavors to their coffee to enhance the taste.

Matcha has an earthy taste with a slight sweetness.

Some describe matcha as having a vegetal or grassy flavor, which can be an acquired taste for coffee drinkers. High-quality matcha should have a smooth, creamy texture and a balance of sweet and bitter notes.

Many people find that they enjoy the unique flavor of matcha once they get used to it, but before that, some people actually don’t really like the earthy flavor.

Matcha can be enjoyed on its own, whisked with hot water, or combined with milk for a creamy latte-style drink.

Some people also enjoy adding matcha to smoothies – this is also a new trend in shops and cafés.

5. The health benefits of matcha: full of antioxidants

One of the biggest advantages of matcha over coffee is its impressive antioxidant content. Matcha is rich in a class of antioxidants called catechins, particularly EGCG (epigallocatechin gallate).

While coffee gives you an instant jump, matcha holds on longer with your energy levels

These powerful compounds have been linked to various health benefits, including:

Improved heart health: Studies have shown that regular consumption of green tea, including matcha, may lower the risk of heart disease by reducing LDL (“bad”) cholesterol and triglycerides.

Reduced inflammation: The antioxidants in matcha have anti-inflammatory properties, which may help protect against chronic diseases like diabetes, arthritis, and certain types of cancer.

Enhanced brain function: The combination of caffeine and L-theanine in matcha has been shown to improve cognitive performance, including attention, memory, and reaction time.

Boosted metabolism: Some studies suggest that the catechins in green tea may help increase metabolism and promote fat burning, potentially aiding in weight loss efforts.

In fact, matcha contains 137 times more antioxidants than regular green tea!

6. Matcha benefits over coffee

Many people find themselves relying on coffee to get through the day, leading to feelings of dependence.

he rapid spike and crash of coffee’s caffeine can create a cycle of energy highs and lows, leaving you craving more to maintain productivity.

While matcha does contain caffeine, the presence of L-theanine helps to balance out its effects, providing a more stable energy release without the jitters or crash

This means that matcha may be less likely to lead to the same kind of addiction that coffee can.

Everyone’s tolerance and response to caffeine is different.

Some people may still experience withdrawal symptoms or cravings when cutting back on matcha, just as they would with coffee.

As with any caffeinated beverage, it’s best to consume matcha in moderation and listen to your body’s cues.

7. Should you make the switch from coffee to matcha: addictivity levels

The decision to switch from coffee to matcha comes down to personal preference and individual health goals.

f you’re looking for a healthier alternative that still provides an energy boost, matcha might be worth a try. The added benefits of antioxidants and sustained energy release could be particularly appealing for those looking to optimize their wellness routine.

If you simply can’t give up your morning coffee ritual, there’s no need to force yourself.

Infographic of matcha vs coffee

Coffee also has its own set of health benefits, including improved cognitive function and reduced risk of certain diseases.

The key is to enjoy your preferred beverage in moderation and be mindful of any added sugars or creamers that could negate the potential health benefits.

If you’re interested in exploring matcha but not ready to give up coffee entirely, consider incorporating it into your routine gradually. You could start by replacing one cup of coffee with matcha a few times a week, or enjoying matcha as an afternoon pick-me-up or a relaxing evening beverage.

8. How to make matcha at home

If you’re ready to give matcha a go, here’s a step-by-step guide to making a delicious cup at home:

Start with high-quality matcha powder. Look for brands that use pure, shade-grown green tea leaves and stone-ground processing methods.

Sift 1-2 teaspoons of matcha powder into a small bowl using a fine-mesh strainer. This helps to remove any clumps and ensures a smooth, creamy texture.

Heat water to just below boiling point (around 175°F or 80°C). If the water is too hot, it can make the matcha taste bitter.

Pour the hot water into the bowl with the sifted matcha powder.

Using a bamboo whisk (chasen), whisk the mixture vigorously in a “W” pattern until it becomes frothy and well-combined. This helps to dissolve the powder and create a smooth, creamy consistency.

Pour the prepared matcha into your favorite mug and enjoy!

You can also experiment with different matcha recipes, such as iced matcha lattes, matcha smoothies, or even matcha-infused baked goods. The possibilities are endless!

Go ahead, experiment with matcha, savor your favorite coffee, or mix it up and enjoy the best of both worlds. Life is too short to limit yourself to just one type of caffeine fix!

Ever wondered where your coffee comes from?

Sure, you know it’s beans, but did you know those beans come from a fruit?

Welcome to the world of coffee cherry – the colorful, nutrient-packed fruit that’s the secret behind your daily cup.

The Coffee Chronicler made a great video on YouTube explaining what coffee cherry consists of, and how it ends up in your morning coffee. Check it out!

In this post, we’re going to examine this often-overlooked superstar of the coffee world and discover why it’s so much more than just a vessel for beans.

1. What is coffee cherry?

The first true question is: what is coffee cherry?

Well, coffee cherry is also known as coffee berry. Coffee cherry is the fruit of the coffee plant.

Picture a small, round fruit about the size of a grape, usually bright red or deep purple when ripe. This little powerhouse is where your morning cup of joe begins its journey.

Inside each cherry, you’ll find two coffee beans nestled snugly together. These beans are actually seeds, waiting to be harvested, processed, and roasted into the aromatic coffee we all know and love.

The cherry plays an important role in coffee production. We can share three main aspects of it:

It protects and nourishes the beans as they grow

Its ripeness determines when the beans are ready for harvest

The way it’s processed can hugely impact the final flavor of your coffee

Basically, it all start with a humble little coffee cherry!

2. What does coffee cherry consist of: the anatomy of the coffee plant

Now that I shared the basics of coffee cherry, time to unwrap it!

Let’s peel back the layers of this fascinating fruit:

Skin (Exocarp): The outer layer that gives the cherry its vibrant color.

Pulp (Mesocarp): A sweet, fleshy layer just beneath the skin.

Mucilage: A slimy, sticky layer that clings to the beans.

Parchment (Endocarp): A papery layer that envelops each bean.

Silverskin: A thin membrane hugging the bean itself.

Bean (Seed): The prize inside – usually two per cherry.

Each of these layers have their own role in developing the flavor profile of the coffee beans. If I’d have to mention two, it would be the pulp and the mucilage.

Why?

Well, they contribute to the amount of sugars and acids that influence the taste of the final product – your coffee.

3. Types of coffee fruits and coffee beans

You might already know this, but… practice makes perfect!

While there are over 120 species of coffee plants, two main types dominate the whole coffee industry:

Coffea arabica (Arabica)

Accounts for 60-70% of global production

Known for its smooth, complex flavors

Grows best at higher altitudes

More susceptible to disease and pests

Coffea canephora (Robusta)

Makes up 30-40% of global production

Has a stronger, often bitter taste

More resilient and easier to grow

Higher caffeine content

Each of these coffee cherries influence the taste of your coffee. And they are also influenced by their own environment: from growing conditions to processing methods, everything has its share in the taste and development of it.

4. Vitamins in coffee cherry

Coffee cherries are surprisingly nutritious!

Here’s a breakdown of the vitamins you’ll find packed into these little fruits:

Vitamin C: A powerful antioxidant that boosts immune function

B Vitamins: Including B1, B2, and B3, great for energy and brain health

Vitamin E: Another antioxidant that’s beneficial for skin health

Vitamin A: Important for eye health and immune function

Vitamin K: Crucial for blood clotting and bone health

It’s worth noting that the vitamin content can change based on factors like coffee variety, growing conditions, and ripeness at harvest.

5. Pros and cons of coffee cherry

Although the coffee cherry is full of vitamins, everything has its own pros and cons.

Like any food, coffee cherries come with their own set of benefits and drawbacks.

Let’s take a look at them again:

Pros:

Rich in antioxidants

Potential brain-boosting properties

Natural energy boost (with less caffeine than coffee beans)

Possible aid in weight management

Anti-inflammatory properties

Cons:

Limited availability of coffee cherry products

Potential caffeine sensitivity for some individuals

Possible allergic reactions

Risk of mold or bacterial growth if not properly processed

Often more expensive than traditional coffee products

So, you can see that while the pros are exciting, it’s also important that when you’re choosing a coffee cherry, more research is needed to fully understand the effects of coffee cherries on health.

Always, always (!) consult with a healthcare professional before you want to add new, unknown supplements to your diet – especially when you’re looking to add coffee cherry. (You can learn more about how much caffeine is in a cup of coffee on our blog.)

6. Can you eat coffee cherry?

Yes, you can eat coffee cherry!

In fact, in some coffee-growing regions, the fresh cherries are enjoyed as a snack.

However, it’s not common to find fresh coffee cherries outside of these areas.

More often, you’ll see coffee cherry in processed forms:

Cascara: A tea-like beverage made from dried coffee cherry skins

Coffee flour: Made from dried and ground coffee cherries

Supplements: Powders or capsules made from coffee cherry extract

These coffee cherry products allow you to enjoy the potential benefits of coffee cherries without having to track down the fresh fruit.

When trying coffee cherry products, start small to see how your body reacts.

While they are generally safe, some people might experience side effects like increased heart rate or digestive issues due to the caffeine content. It comes in different form compared to a cup of coffee.

I think coffee cherry is much more than just a vessel for coffee beans.

It’s a nutrient-rich fruit with its own role in coffee production and potential health benefits.

It can serve as your new superfood, so it’s definitely worth exploring. Why don’t you give it a try?

Your taste buds – and maybe your health – might thank you!

Let’s imagine a bit of an adventure in the world of coffee!

Your morning espresso is a window into the soul of coffee brewing. And a bottomless portafilter – of which we’re talking about today – is that window. A bottomless portafilter is a glimpse into the art and the science of espresso extraction.

But what is a bottomless portafilter? This is exactly what I’ll explain in this blog post. But before I do it, let Coffee Time YouTube channel give you an intro:

Emergent Brew will give you insights of the 5 benefits for using a bottomless portafilter, and I’ll also share some drawbacks of this method.

1. What is a bottomless portafilter?

All right, coffee lovers!

Let’s start with the basics: what is a bottomless portafilter?

A bottomless portafilter is a modified version of the standard portafilter – also known as a naked portafilter. It can be found on espresso machines. Unlike its traditional version, this portafilter is missing its bottom portion, so you can actually see the filter basket’s underside.

Why are these portafilters useful?

Well, this design was made so that coffee could flow directly from the basket into the cup. It’s cleaner, easier, so it doesn’t just have a great display of crema and extraction, but also makes different types of coffee.

2. How to use a bottomless portafilter

Okay, second question: how to use a bottomless portafilter?

Bottomless portafilters require precision and attention to detail.

First of all, you have to make sure that the coffee grounds are evenly distributed in the filter basket. I always tamp with consistent pressure to create a level of bed of coffee.

You could do the same.

When brewing, I love to watch the flow of espresso from the basket’s bottom – it’s a wonderful site.

A well-executed shot will have a uniform, cone-shaped stream of golden-brown liquid.

Over time, you can adjust your grind size, dose, and even your tamping technique based on what you see to achieve for your perfect extraction!

3. 5 Benefits of using a bottomless portafilter

There are 5 fantastic benefits when you use a bottomless portafilter!

Let’s go over them one-by-one?

Visual feedback: The exposed bottom allows you to see the extraction process in real-time. This helps you identify and correct issues.

Improved shot quality: You can reduce the channeling by eliminating the spouts.

A better crema: The direct flow from basket to cup preserves the integrity of the crema. All of this results in a rich, flavorful espresso.

Easier cleaning: With fewer parts, these portafilters are simpler to maintain and keep hygienic.

Temperature stability: The absence of a bottom helps to have a consistent temperature throughout the extraction process.

4. Potential disadvantages of a bottomless portafilter

Beside the benefits, these portafilters also have some disadvantages.

They’re definitely not without challenges.

The design that makes it bottomless leads to messier shots – especially if you’re a beginner. When you’re just starting out, small or even the tiniest of imperfections become glaringly obvious.

Of course, this can be frustrating but also educational and everything is in order to help you make better coffee.

5. Common issues with a bottomless portafilter

Spraying and channeling are the most frequent problems encountered with bottomless portafilters.

Spraying occurs when the espresso shoots out in multiple directions, so it created a bit of a mess.

All of this, of course, is because of uneven extraction.

Other problems are channeling – visible as jets or streams of lighter-colored liquid, suggests that water is finding paths of least resistance through the coffee puck.

Both issues can be addressed by refining your distribution and tamping techniques, as well as adjusting your grind size. (Take a look at our coffee grind chart if you want to use the correct dosages.)

You want to feel the taste of coffee but don’t want the kick of the caffeine and other substances?

Don’t worry!

Here’s where decaf coffee comes into the picture…

James Hoffmann made a fantastic video about how decaf coffee works, how they decaffeinate it, and when and how you should drink it:

In this blog post, I’m going to expand this knowledge with other important aspects and wandering onto the territory of science. Because coffee is a serious thing, and so should we treat it! 😉

1. What is decaf coffee?

Decaf coffee, or decaffeinated coffee, is made from beans that have had most of their caffeine removed.

While an 8 oz cup of regular coffee typically contains about 95 mg of caffeine, decaf usually has only around 2 to 5 mg.

The process of making decaf coffee begins with selecting regular coffee beans – most of the time Arabica – known for their rich flavor.

2. Decaffeination process: how to remove caffeine from regular coffee: the

I’d say that the most common method to remove caffeine from regular coffee is the Swiss Water Process.

What is it and how does it work?

First, it starts with soaking the beans in hot water to dissolve the caffeine. The hot water is then filtered with activated carbon – this is how the flavors remain in the water.

Another method uses chemical solvents, where the beans are steamed and then rinsed with a solvent like methylene chloride or ethyl acetate to selectively extract caffeine.

The CO2 process is more modern and involves using carbon dioxide under high pressure to extract caffeine without sacrificing flavor.

And after that, when the caffeine is removed, the beans are dried and roasted like regular coffee.

Although the process tries to keep the flavor of regular coffee, there might be slight differences and it’s because of the decaffeination process.

BUT… and here comes the trick!

A common misconception is that decaf coffee is entirely caffeine-free; in reality, it still has a small amount of caffeine.

All in all, decaf coffee is an excellent choice if you want to enjoy coffee without the stimulating effects of caffeine.

3. Is decaf coffee safe?

Decaf coffee is generally safe for most people.

The decaffeination process removes most caffeine, reducing its stimulating effects, which benefits those sensitive to caffeine or looking to limit their intake.

Health experts often consider decaf a healthy choice due to its antioxidant content. To translate it simply: decaf coffee still has almost all the benefits that regular coffee has but without the caffeine. (If you’re wondering how much caffeine is in a cup of coffee, check our article on this topic.)

But of course, there are a few considerations.

Some decaf coffees use chemical solvents in the decaffeination process, raising questions about potential residue.

Reputable brands make sure that these solvents are removed completely and are safe for consumption.

I would advise everyone who are sensitive to certain compounds found in coffee to keep an eye out on packages: stomach upset or acid reflux can be a problem without caffeine content.

And one more thing: for those with specific health concerns or conditions (pregnancy, metabolic disorders) it’s good to consult a healthcare professional before fully moving onto decaf coffee.

4. Is your decaffeinated coffee safe for consumption?

Want to make sure your decaf coffee is safe to drink?

Here’s what to do:

Check the label: Good brands usually tell you how they decaffeinate their coffee. Look for ones that are open about their methods.

Look for certifications: Things like USDA Organic or Fair Trade labels can be a good sign. They mean the coffee meets certain standards.

Read reviews: See what other people are saying. They might mention if something seems off about the coffee.

Research the brand: Established companies that care about quality are usually a safer bet. Check out their website to learn more.

Go organic: If you’re worried about chemicals, organic decaf might be your best choice. They typically use natural methods to remove caffeine.

Ask questions: If you’re still unsure, don’t be shy – contact the company directly and ask about their process.

Trust your senses: If the coffee looks, smells, or tastes weird, don’t drink it. Your gut feeling is important here.

And then, there’s this really cool website called Check Your Decaf. You can enter your brand and check whether it is chemical free.

I know, I know… Frothing milk might seem like a barista’s secret weapon, but guess what?

You can totally master this skill! And you can do it in your own kitchen.

But how to froth milk with or without equipment? James Hoffmann is here to help:

It doesn’t really matter if you’re a latte lover or a cappuccino connoisseur, frothing milk can make your coffee habits more colorful, and you can even use it as a trick at party events.

From the shake-it-up jar method to the French press trick, we’ve got options that’ll work with what you’ve already got in your kitchen.

Grab your favorite mug, and let’s start!

Why froth milk for your coffee: steam, foam, and add luxury to your boring days

I like frothing milk with my coffee. It gives me a cozy feeling, like wrapping a blanket around myself on a cold, autumn day. This creamy blanket makes even the most boring days special.

It transforms the regular coffee-experience into a luxurious, cafe-style one!

But why and how to froth milk to feel the same way?

Just as I mentioned previously, frothed milk adds a velvety, creamy texture to your coffee, plus, it softens the intensity of strong coffee.

If I want to mention the effects milk frothing has on coffee, I can say that it allows for beautiful latte art (if you’re into that Instagram-worthy stuff). Maybe you didn’t even know this, but frothed milk helps retain heat, so it keeps your coffee warmer for longer.

Just like with everything else, there are ups and downs, potential benefits and downsides for frothing milk. (And you can’t always have the best automatic espresso machines by your side…)

<rect x="3" y="3" width="18" height="18" rx="2" ry="2"/><line x1="12" y1="8" x2="12" y2="16"/><line x1="8" y1="12" x2="16" y2="12"/>

The potential benefits could be:

If you’re using low-fat milk, frothing can make it taste richer without adding calories.

The process of frothing adds air, which can make you feel fuller with less milk.

It’s a great way to enjoy milk-based coffee drinks with non-dairy alternatives like almond or oat milk.

<rect x="3" y="3" width="18" height="18" rx="2" ry="2"/><line x1="8" y1="12" x2="16" y2="12"/>

And the possible downsides are:

Frothed milk adds volume, which might mean you’re consuming less actual coffee.

If you’re watching calories, be aware that whole milk froth can add up quickly.

Some people find very frothy milk too filling or overwhelming for their taste.

Keep in mind: Whole milk will give you the richest froth but also the most calories and fat. Skim milk froths well but might not taste as creamy. Non-dairy alternatives each have their own nutritional profiles.

And now, onto the 5 different ways to froth milk at home

1. How to froth milk with electric milk frother

Electric milk frothers are the lazy barista’s best friend.

Caffeine poisoning… Whether you believe it or not, it’s a thing!

Just like with everything else, you should be careful with caffeine, too. In this blog post, we’ll uncover the myths surrounding coffee and caffeine poisoning, so you will know how to avoid it.

On a more serious note: Insider Science made a scientific explanation on what happens to your body when you have caffeine poisoning:

Let’s start with the basics!

1. What is caffeine poisoning?

Caffeine poisoning is essentially what happens when you consume way too much caffeine for your body to handle.

It’s like overloading your system with a stimulant. Think of your body as a car engine – a little bit of fuel (caffeine) gets it running smoothly, but if you pour in way too much, the engine starts to sputter and malfunction.

In this case, the “malfunction” is your body reacting badly to the overdose of caffeine.

It’s your system saying, “Whoa, hold up! This is too much for me to process!”

When this happens, you start experiencing a range of unpleasant and potentially dangerous symptoms. Let’s explore the sources of caffeine and then the symptoms… and of course, what you can do with it!

2. Sources of caffeine

Let’s start with the obvious ones: coffee, of course, and tea are big sources.

But don’t forget about soft drinks, especially colas and energy drinks – these can pack a serious caffeine punch

Even some non-cola sodas contain caffeine.

Then we’ve got chocolate – both as a food and a drink. Dark chocolate generally contains more caffeine than milk chocolate. Some ice creams and yogurts, particularly coffee or chocolate flavored ones, can also contain caffeine.

Energy bars and even some types of gum can be sneaky sources of caffeine. They’re often marketed as performance boosters for athletes or students.

In the world of medicine, some OTC (over-the-counter) pain relievers contain caffeine, as it can help boost the effectiveness of the pain-relieving ingredients.

There are also caffeine pills marketed as alertness aids.

And here’s a fun fact: guarana, a plant native to the Amazon, contains more caffeine than coffee beans!

To give you an overview, I created a table with approximate caffeine content for different beverages:

Food/Drink

Serving Size

Approximate Caffeine Content

Brewed coffee

8 oz (240 ml)

95-200 mg

Espresso

1 oz (30 ml)

47-75 mg

Instant coffee

8 oz (240 ml)

27-173 mg

Black tea

8 oz (240 ml)

14-70 mg

Green tea

8 oz (240 ml)

24-45 mg

Cola

12 oz (355 ml)

23-35 mg

Energy drinks

8.4 oz (250 ml)

70-100 mg

Dark chocolate

1 oz (28 g)

12-30 mg

Milk chocolate

1 oz (28 g)

1-15 mg

Hot cocoa

8 oz (240 ml)

3-13 mg

Chocolate ice cream

1/2 cup (68 g)

2-4 mg

Yerba Mate

8 oz (240 ml)

65-130 mg

Guarana

1 g

40-80 mg

Caffeine pills

1 tablet

100-200 mg

Some pain relievers

1 tablet

65 mg

3. How much caffeine is too much?

Apart from coffee, energy drinks are a common culprit. They often contain high levels of caffeine, and it’s easy to drink several in a short time, especially if you’re trying to stay awake for a long study session or a night out.

Caffeine pills are another potential danger zone. These concentrated forms of caffeine can have a massive dose quickly, and it’s easy to lose track of how many you’ve taken.

Some pre-workout supplements used by fitness enthusiasts are loaded with caffeine. If someone doesn’t carefully measure their dose or combines these with other caffeine sources, it can lead to overconsumption.

Mixing different caffeine sources throughout the day can also add up quickly, so be careful!

Maybe you start with a few cups of coffee, grab an energy drink in the afternoon, snack on some dark chocolate, and then have some tea in the evening. Each on its own might be fine, but the cumulative effect can be substantial.

There’s also the issue of caffeine sensitivity. Some people are more affected by caffeine than others, so what’s a normal amount for one person might be too much for another.

4. Symptoms of caffeine overdose

Here’s a bulleted list of caffeine poisoning symptoms, along with brief explanations:

Jitters or restlessness: Feeling unable to sit still or relax.

Anxiety: Heightened sense of worry or unease.

Rapid heartbeat: Heart racing or pounding in the chest.

Insomnia: Inability to fall asleep or stay asleep.

Digestive issues: Nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea.

Headache: Often described as a pounding sensation.

Dizziness: Feeling unsteady or lightheaded.

Confusion: Difficulty thinking clearly or concentrating.

Irritability: Easily annoyed or agitated.

Muscle tremors: Involuntary shaking or twitching.

Increased blood pressure: Can cause a feeling of pressure in the head.

Frequent urination: Body trying to flush out excess caffeine.

Dehydration: Result of increased urination and sweating.

Fever: In severe cases, body temperature may rise.

Hallucinations: In extreme cases, seeing or hearing things that aren’t there.

Seizures: In rare, severe cases of overdose.

Chest pain: In serious cases, can indicate heart issues.

These symptoms typically appear within a few hours of excessive caffeine consumption and can be anything from mild to severe…

5. What can you do when you have caffeine poisoning?

When you experience the symptoms of caffeine poisoning, the first thing you have to do is stop consuming any more caffeine… immediately!

This will prevent the situation from getting worse.

Next, try to stay calm. Anxiety is a common symptom of caffeine overdose, and panicking can make you feel even worse.

After you’re a bit relaxed: hydrate. Start drinking water to help flush the caffeine out of your system. Avoid alcohol or sugary drinks, as these can dehydrate you further. If you can stomach it, try eating something light. Food can help slow the absorption of caffeine in your system.

If possible, try to walk around a bit. Light exercise can help your body metabolize the caffeine faster. However, if you’re feeling too dizzy or unwell, it’s better to rest.

For milder symptoms, you might just need to wait it out.

Caffeine’s effects typically peak within 30-60 minutes of consumption and can last for several hours. Try to find a quiet, comfortable place to rest until the effects subside.

However, if you’re experiencing severe symptoms like difficulty breathing, chest pain, confusion, or hallucinations, don’t hesitate to seek medical help immediately.

Call emergency services or have someone take you to the nearest emergency room.

6. Medical help for too much caffeine consumption

When you need medical help, the doctor’s will first assess your condition by checking your vital signs, including heart rate, blood pressure, and temperature. They might also run blood tests to determine the level of caffeine in your system and check for any electrolyte imbalances.

In many cases, treatment involves supportive care.

This means they’ll treat your symptoms while your body naturally eliminates the caffeine. They might give you intravenous (IV) fluids to help with dehydration and to speed up caffeine excretion.

If you’re experiencing severe anxiety or agitation, they might administer a sedative to help you relax. For rapid or irregular heartbeats, medications to stabilize your heart rhythm could be used.

In cases of nausea and vomiting, anti-nausea medications might be given. If you’ve only recently consumed a large amount of caffeine, they might consider gastric lavage (stomach pumping) or activated charcoal to prevent further absorption.

For very severe cases, more intensive treatments might be necessary.

The good news is that caffeine poisoning is treated very effectively in most cases. And the most important thing is: try to stay calm

7. Long-term impact of caffeine poisoning

Another good news is that in most cases, caffeine poisoning doesn’t typically have long-term health impacts, especially if it’s a one-time thing and properly treated.

Repeated episodes of caffeine overconsumption or chronic excessive caffeine intake can potentially lead to some long-term issues.

It might lead to chronic sleep problems, or impact heart health.

There’s also the risk of developing caffeine dependency. While not exactly the same as addiction to drugs or alcohol, caffeine dependency can lead to withdrawal symptoms when you try to cut back, which some people find quite unpleasant.

That being said, these long-term impacts are generally associated with chronic overconsumption rather than a single instance of caffeine poisoning.

For most people who experience caffeine poisoning once and then adjust their habits, the long-term health outlook is good.

White coffee… Did you ever hear about it? Is it just a myth? What is white coffee really?

A question I’ll answer in this blog post! You can check this short video brought to you by FreshCoffeeBlog right now, and after that, let’s examine what is white coffee:

The term itself is a bit confusing, so it’s time to clear this up!

1. What is white coffee?

White coffee can mean different things in different contexts.

In the US, white coffee means light coffee beans: coffee beans that have been roasted at a lower temperature for a shorter period of time than traditional coffee beans. This, of course, will give you a very light-colored bean with a special flavor.

To my taste, it’s usually nutty and less bitter. All of this is because the lighter roast preserves more natural flavors of the coffee bean, and it’s higher in acidity.

But in some countries, like in Malaysia, white coffee is how coffee is prepared rather than the roast itself. It means coffee that is roasted with palm oil margarine and served with sweetened condensed milk.

2. What’s the difference between white coffee and regular coffee?

The biggest differences between white coffee vs regular coffee is in the roasting process, the flavor, and sometimes, the preparation method.

Let’s explore them one by one in the next sections:

Roasting process of white coffee vs black coffee

Coffee Type

Roasting Temperature

Roasting Duration

Bean Color

White Coffee

Around 325°F (163°C)

Shorter duration (a few minutes)

Pale, almost straw-colored beans

Regular Coffee

Ranges from 370°F to 540°F (188°C to 282°C)

Several minutes to over 15 minutes

Varies from light to dark brown depending on the roast level

How does white coffee taste compared to regular coffee

Coffee Type

Flavor Profile

Bitterness

Acidity

White Coffee

Nutty, mild, sometimes slightly earthy. Retains more of the bean’s natural flavors.

Less bitter

Higher acidity

Regular Coffee

Varies widely: light roasts preserve original flavors, medium roasts balance flavors, dark roasts develop robust, smoky, and sometimes chocolatey flavors.

Varies by roast level

Varies by roast level

3. Does white coffee have more Caffeine content in white coffee vs black coffee

Both white coffee and black coffee contains different amounts of caffeine due to the roasting process. White coffee is lightly reaster and is closer to the original caffeine content compared to the regular (black) coffee which is roasted as medium or even dark.

But what does this mean in real-life scenarios?

Well, the difference is only marginal. A typical cup will give you a good caffeine boost either way. I have to add that the brewing method also plays a role in the amount of caffeine.

But enough of the boring talk! Here’s a table which compares different types of roasts based on caffeine content.

Coffee Type

Caffeine Content (per 8 oz cup)

White Coffee

~100-105 mg

Light Roast

~95-100 mg

Medium Roast

~90-95 mg

Dark Roast

~85-90 mg

4. The benefits of white coffee: is white coffee healthy?

This question on whether white coffee is healthier than other types of coffee isn’t a simple question.

I think it depends on your individual health goals. And even what you and I would define as healthy?

White coffee has lighter roasting process, keeps more of the original nutrients and the antioxidants found in the coffee beans. I consider the antioxidants a good thing: what I know about them is that they combat inflammations and reduce the risks of certain chronic diseases. White coffee is less bitter, so it need less sugar or cream to mask the bitterness. And this takes you to lower calorie intakes.

But!

White coffee has higher acidity and it’s not really good for people with sensitive stomachs or reflux issues.

All-in-all, let’s create a table with the pros and cons of white coffe:

Aspect

Pros

Cons

Antioxidants

More antioxidants due to lighter roast.

Higher acidity may cause reflux issues.

Caffeine Content

Slightly higher caffeine.

May not be suitable for caffeine-sensitive individuals.

Flavor

Less bitter, reducing need for sugar/cream.

Higher acidity might not suit everyone.

Nutrient Retention

More natural nutrients preserved.

Harder beans require strong grinders.

Digestive Impact

Easier on the stomach for some.

Higher acidity can upset sensitive stomachs.

Caloric Intake

Lower calorie if consumed black.

Malaysian-style can be high in calories/sugar.

5. How to make white coffee with white coffee beans at home

Brewing white coffee with white coffee beans is quite different from making regular coffee…

And I have to be honest: the first time I made it, it was a complete disaster. 🙂

But since then, I learned the process!

First of all, you’ll need freshly roasted white coffee beans. These beans are harder than regular coffee beans, so a sturdy grinder is necessary to achieve the desired consistency.

When using an espresso machine, fill the portafilter with the finely ground white coffee, tamp the grounds evenly, and brew the espresso shot as you normally would.

For a French press, add the coarsely ground coffee to the press, pour hot water over the grounds, stir gently, and let it steep for about four minutes before pressing the plunger down evenly.

If you prefer a drip coffee maker, place the medium-ground coffee in the filter basket, add the appropriate amount of water to the reservoir, and start the brewing process.

One tip from me: adjust the brew ratio! You may need to experiment with it (like I did), so you can find the perfect balance for your taste.

For an extra kick, add a pinch of cardamom or cinnamon to the grounds before brewing, but only do this after you already know how to do it properly without it.

If you’re a coffee-lover, you’ve probably already explored beyond the realms of the basic drip coffee or simple latte.

Only two species of coffee plants are responsible for supplying the majority of the world’s coffee. C. canephora robusta coffee beans and Coffea arabica beans are the main types. However, the number of recipes you can concoct with these types of coffee beans seems to be infinite.

TRT World has a great video explaining the differences between various coffee types:

There are at least 25 various beverages you can make with simple coffee beans. Below, we highlight different types of coffee drinks, covering everything from the famous espresso to some obscure specialty drinks you may never have heard of—until now.

Types of Coffee #1: Black Coffee

If you’re a purist who believes that coffee should be a no-frills drink, then black coffee is for you. Luckily, there are many different types of coffee drinks in this category.

If you’re a purist who believes that coffee should be a no-frills drink, then black coffee is for you

Espresso

Thanks to its high caffeine content, the espresso shot is often used as a base for other espresso drinks.

How it’s made: An espresso is made by forcing pressurized steam through ground coffee beans. The espresso machine heats water to create steam and siphons through the portafilter holding the ground coffee.
Perfect for: People who love to get a quick hit of caffeine in a single sip. Need more? Upgrade your single shot of espresso to a double shot of espresso.

Ristretto

Ristretto means “short” in Italian, a moniker that refers to how this drink is made. It’s the counterpart to a lungo coffee. Lungo means “long” in Italian.

How it’s made: Ristretto is made like an espresso but using half as much water. This results in a more concentrated single-shot drink with a slightly different taste.
Perfect for: People who want their espresso but are so busy they don’t have time for a full one.

Americano

According to legend, the Americano was developed in Italy during World War II. “Cafe Americano” is the Italian reference to how Americans take their coffee.

How it’s made: An Americano is made by pouring hot water over a shot of espresso, transforming the small shot into a big cup of coffee.
Perfect for: People who love the idea of espresso but can’t stomach the strong taste.

Doppio

Doppio is basically a double espresso shot.

How it’s made: A doppio is made like an espresso but passes through the espresso machine’s portafilter via a double spout.
Perfect for: People who need that extra hit of caffeine in the mornings.

Pour Over Coffee

Pour-over coffee is proof that you don’t need any fancy gadgets or gizmos to enjoy a great cup of coffee.

How it’s made: Pour over coffee is made using a dripper, which holds a filter containing ground coffee beans. The dripper is positioned over an empty mug. Hot water is poured over the coffee grounds before slowly trickling down to the cup below. Want to try it yourself? Check out our in-depth pour over coffee brewing guide!
Perfect for: People who have plenty of time in the mornings.

Types of Coffee #2: Drip Coffee

Don’t let coffee snobs fool you. Drip coffee is more potent than espresso.

How it’s made: Drip coffee is made using a particular coffee machine, which heats water and then drips the boiling water over ground coffee. It passes through a filter, and the finished product ends up in a coffee pot.
Perfect for: People who want to recreate the vibe of a classic American diner at home.

Batch Brew

Batch brew offers a new take on the traditional pour-over cup.

How it’s made: Batch brew coffee is made just like a pour-over coffee—except a machine, not a person, is doing the pouring. Batch brew machines disperse the water in small doses over brief intervals.
Perfect for: People who love the flavor of pour-over but can’t be bothered to do the actual pouring.

Instant Coffee

It doesn’t get any easier than instant coffee.

Instant Coffee: it doesn’t get easier

How it’s made: Instant coffee is made by pouring boiling water over powdered or crystalline coffee directly in your mug.
Perfect for: People who want to stir and sip.

AeroPress Coffee

This is one of the types of coffee drinks that require special machinery—in this case, an AeroPress device.

How it’s made: The AeroPress device steeps the coffee for less than one minute. It’s then pressed through the device’s filter with a plunger.
Perfect for: People who want to be able to say they own an AeroPress.

Vacuum Coffee

Here’s another type of coffee that requires a particular gimmick. In this case, you’ll need a vacuum coffee pot.

How it’s made: The vacuum coffee pot has two vessels. The lower vessel boils water while the upper container holds coffee grounds. The pressure from the heat causes the boiling water from below to push up, brewing the coffee.
Perfect for: People who want to feel like they’re mad scientists as they brew their morning cup (and who want something more cutting edge than a simple Moka pot).

Immersion Coffee

French press coffee is one popular type of immersion coffee.

How it’s made: Immersion coffee is made by immersing coffee grounds into boiling water and steeping them. This results in a richer taste.
Perfect for: People who already own a French press and want to put it to use.

Chemex

Chemex is another coffee gadget. Although it dates back to the mid-1950s, it’s seen a surge of popularity since the early 2000s.

How it’s made: Chemex uses the pour-over method. The difference is the unique Chemex filter, which is thicker than a standard filter, resulting in a slower brew and a more robust taste.
Perfect for: People who want a richer cup of coffee.

Types of Coffee #3: Coffee Drinks With Milk or Cream

If plain coffee isn’t your thing, there are plenty of milk- and cream-infused options to choose from. Read on for different types of coffee drinks in the “au lait” (with milk) category.

Flat White

The flat white originated in Australia and has since become a global sensation.

How it’s made: The flat white is made with espresso and a small amount of steamed milk, topped with incredibly dense and creamy foam.
Perfect for: People who want to enjoy the aroma of espresso but want to temper the taste.

Cappuccino

This drink can be served just with foam or dressed up with cocoa powder, a dusting of cinnamon, a vanilla stick, chocolate syrup, and more. Some cultures even add ice cream (the Italian affogato) or whipped cream to their cappuccino, making it more like a dessert.

How it’s made: The cappuccino is made of espresso, steamed milk, and foamed milk (in equal ratio).
Perfect for: People who love foam and froth.

Latte

Many people get a latte versus cappuccino confused. In short, the cappuccino maintains the coffee taste, while a latte tastes more like milk.

How it’s made: A latte is made with milk and espresso, with the milk dominating the drink.
Perfect for: People who don’t actually like the taste of coffee.

Caffe Breve

You might call this the American version of the traditional Italian latte.

How it’s made: A cafe breve is made with steamed milk, milk foam, and espresso (ratio of 2-2-1). It’s foamier than a cappuccino.
Perfect for: People who can’t get enough foam.

Piccolo Latte

“Piccolo” means “small” in Italian. You can probably already guess how this drink is made.

How it’s made: This mini latte is made like a latte, except it uses a ristretto instead of a standard espresso shot.
Perfect for: People who want the milky taste of a latte with fewer calories.

Macchiato

The word macchiato translates roughly to “mark” or “stain” in Italian.

How it’s made: The macchiato consists of a simple express shot with just a splash of milk, “staining” it.
Perfect for: People who want to show off their globalized language skills.

Latte Macchiato

This drink is basically a latte but with an aesthetically pleasing twist.

How it’s made: The latte macchiato is made by pouring the espresso into the hot milk (instead of the other way around). You can distinctly see the different layers of the drink (foam milk at the top, espresso in the middle, and milk at the bottom).
Perfect for: People who need a pretty picture for their Instagram.

Cortado

Consider this the no-frills, zero-froth version of a cappuccino.

How it’s made: The cortado is made with a one-to-one ratio of espresso and steamed milk.
Perfect for: People who don’t have the patience to find their espresso amidst froth.

Types of Coffee #4: Cold Coffee Drinks

A hot cup of coffee on a scorching summer’s day isn’t always appealing. Thankfully, there are many variations of coffee drinks you can enjoy cold.

Cold Brew Coffee

If you want a chilled cup to wake up to, mixing up a batch of cold brew the night before is the way to go.

How it’s made: To make cold brew coffee, mix ground coffee with room temperature water, stir it up, and put it in the refrigerator to chill overnight. Strain out the grounds before serving. Want to try it yourself?
Nitro Coffee

Nitrogen or “nitro” coffee has a creamy consistency thanks to its unique production process.

How it’s made: Nitro is made like cold brew coffee—except it’s infused with odorless Nitrogen gas.
Perfect for: People who want to turn their coffee into a science experiment.

Espresso Tonic

Coffee purists may cry, but an espresso tonic can be a refreshing pick for a hot summer’s day.

How it’s made: To make this drink, start by making two espresso shots and giving them time to cool. Fill a glass with ice and some fresh-squeezed lime juice. Then add the chilled espresso shots and slowly pour over tonic water. Adjust the amount of water according to your tastes.
Perfect for: People who want to show off their coffee knowledge with an obscure beverage.

Iced Coffee

Unlike a cold brew, iced coffee is made with hot coffee.

How it’s made: Iced coffee takes hot coffee and then cools it gradually, often with the help of ice. Just make sure you brew a strong pot, or your coffee will be watery! Want to try it yourself? Check out this in-depth iced coffee brewing guide!
Perfect for: People who constantly forget to make their cold brew the night before.

Types of Coffee #5: Surprising Coffee Drinks

Think you’ve heard of every coffee drink out there? Get ready to be surprised! The below drinks are even more out there than a red-eye or black-eye coffee.

Bulletproof Coffee

This is a popular coffee drink among people who require a diet low in carbs and high in fat. It’s also sometimes referred to as keto coffee.

How it’s made: Bulletproof coffee combines unsalted butter, coconut oil, and brewed coffee. Try it yourself with this bulletproof coffee recipe.
Perfect for: People who are determined to follow any trend out there.

Egg Coffee

Traditionally a Vietnamese drink, it’s become more popular worldwide thanks to social media.

How it’s made: Egg coffee is made by beating egg yolks until they’re creamy and then combining them with coffee, sugar, and condensed milk.
Perfect for: People who are willing to risk salmonella poisoning.

Mazagran

Do coffee and lemon belong together? Try a mazagran and judge for yourself.

How it’s made: To make a mazagran, brew a coffee or espresso shot and add sweetener (honey, vanilla, or white sugar will do). Put ice into a glass and pour the concoction on top. Finally, squeeze in some lemon.
Perfect for: People who want some immune-boosting vitamin C with their morning cup.

Coffee is one of the world’s most popular beverages—coming in third after only water and tea. It’s grown everywhere from New Zealand to Latin America and is a genuinely globalized drink.

The Final Word for different types of coffee drinks

Given coffee’s popularity, it’s no wonder that people have managed to concoct many different types of coffee drinks. You can even get coffee drinks with alcohol like rum or Irish whiskey (also known as Irish coffee). It seems everyone is on the hunt for the perfect cup!

Whether you love a traditional Turkish coffee, prefer a robusta coffee, or like a sweet mocha, there’s a beverage for you. The above list covers the most popular types of coffee beverages out there. Hopefully, you’ve found your perfect pick among them.

You start your day with a strong Greek coffee or a shot of espresso without eating breakfast first. You’re totally energetic, you’re full of ideas, you feel like this will be your big day!

And then, suddenly…

You experience caffeine crash. You feel tired. The energy you felt earlier is nowhere to be found. What is this? What is caffeine crash?

Here’s a short but good explanation brought to you by The Infographics Shows:

In this blog post, I will guide you through this caffeine crash. I’ll explain what it is, what are the symptoms and even give you some tips to avoid it!

1. What is caffeine crash?

A caffeine crash happens after the effects of caffeine wear off.

Here’s how I could explain it with single terms:

When you drink coffee (or for that matter, any caffeinated beverage), you get a sudden burst of energy. This is because caffeine actually blocks certain chemicals in your brain that make you feel sleepy. For a few hours, you feel more awake, alert, energetic. You might even be in a better mood.

But after a while, the caffeine wears off. When this happens, your body responds by making you feel extra tired. Sometimes, even more tired than you were before you had the coffee!

This is – in simple terms – because your body was kind of ‘borrowing’ the energy… and now it has to pay back.

So, a caffeine crash is that sudden drop in energy and alertness you feel after the caffeine’s effects disappear. But don’t worry!

I have some tips for you, so you can avoid this crash the next time you drink coffee!

2. 7 symptoms of a caffeine crash

If you already have caffeine crash, it’s too late. But it’s a chance to analyse the situation, pay attention to your symptoms and even check the time you’re feeling the crash.

Basically, you diagnose yourself with caffeine crash, but compared to heaving a medical issue, you can freely note your symptoms. There’s nothing life-threatening here!

Although all of these symptoms can change depending on your body, here are 7 common ones you might feel because of the caffeine crash:

Fatigue: You may feel extremely tired and worn out.

Irritability: You might find yourself getting easily annoyed or impatient.

Headaches: Sometimes, a caffeine crash can cause headaches or migraines.

Difficulty Concentrating: It can be hard to focus or think clearly.

Mood Swings: Your mood may drop, and you might feel more anxious or down than usual.

Sleepiness: You could feel unusually sleepy or drowsy.

Craving for More Caffeine: You might feel like you need another cup of coffee or another caffeinated drink to perk up again.

If you feel more of these symptoms at the same time, chances are good, you have a caffeine crash. Take notes (with pen and paper or with your phone), check the time you’re feeling it, note when you had your last cup of coffee, and even think about what you did during the day (exercise, work, what you had for breakfast/lunch etc.)

3. 8 tips to avoid a caffeine crash

If you have all of these notes to yourself, you can move on to the next step: following these habits to avoid it!

(By the way, I just mentioned habits. I’m honestly pretty good at building healthy habits and following them. It’s all because of a method I like to call Tiny Trust Builders. If you’re interested in how I do it, check out the Tiny Trust Builders website.)

And now, back to my tips on how you can avoid the feeling of the miserable crash.

Moderate Your Intake

Don’t overdo it with caffeine! Stick to moderate amounts (for most people, that’s about 200-400 mg per day, or roughly 1-3 cups of coffee). You can read more about how much caffeine is in coffee on the website.

Spread It Out

Instead of drinking a large amount of caffeine all at once, try spreading out smaller amounts throughout the day. Drink one after breakfast, than one in your work break, and if you need it, one more early afternoon. This helps maintain a more consistent energy level.

Stay Hydrated

Drink plenty of water. Dehydration can make a caffeine crash feel worse. And drink more water altogether! It’s what we’re made of!

Healthy Snacks

Eat balanced snacks that include protein, healthy fats, and complex carbohydrates. This helps you with your blood sugar levels and keeps your energy steady.

Get Enough Sleep

Make sure you’re getting a good night’s sleep. Relying on caffeine to make up for lack of sleep can lead to bigger crashes. (Yes, I understand, we’re all running around chasing money and a good life but you should really look out for a good night’s sleep.)

Exercise

Regular physical activity can boost your energy levels naturally and can even reduce the need for caffeine.

Slow Down Consumption

Drink your coffee or other caffeinated drinks slowly. This prevents the sudden spike in caffeine levels, which can lead to a bigger drop later.

Choose Lower-Caffeine Options

Opt for teas or decaffeinated coffee during times of the day when you don’t need a strong caffeine boost.

4. Living without the caffeine crash – is it possible?

If you follow the outlined steps, you can reduce the chance and the severity of the caffeine crash.

But I have to be honest: it’s not always a great feeling and eliminating caffeine suddenly can have negative impacts on your life.

Everyone’s body reacts differently to caffeine because our metabolism, our sensitivity and our lifestyle and overall health are different.

If you found your caffeine routine, stick with it. Check on it from time to time. See whether anything changes. And keep up with your healthy, good habits: proper hydration, good sleep, balanced diet!

After the meals, go for a walk – even if it’s just a short one. And if something changes, take notes again to avoid a caffeine crash.

You can come back to this article anytime you want. I promise you: if you follow the steps, you’ll get rid of the caffeine crash.

Happy coffee drinking!
